Book Review - Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life... And Maybe the World

While browsing a local bookstore one day, looking for self-help good reads, this book caught my eye. I hadn't heard anything about it, so I did a quick google search on my phone and found it had great reviews. I flipped through its pages and thought this little book would be a great addition to my personal library.

Not only did it have great reviews, but readers mentioned that it'd be a quick and easy read. Sure enough, they were right. I got through it in one sitting. The book was so easy to read that I felt like the admiral was sharing his life lessons with me over one long afternoon conversation.

The lessons aren't new though. It's stuff you've heard before about never giving up, having to fail in order to succeed, the importance of teamwork, standing up to bullies, and etc.. What's great about the book is that its wisdom is imparted to you through the stories and experiences of a U.S. Navy Seal. It was nice to hear these ideas, that I had already been aware of, be reiterated with a unique perspective.

Overall, I thought it was a good read. It wasn't what I expected, because I thought the whole book would be about the one lesson of starting your day right and making the small things count by "making your bed", but it actually offers more than that. So I don't regret the time spent reading it, and neither will you because it won't be much of your time at all. You'll breeze right through it in one sitting as I did.

Admiral William H. McRaven wrote the book after he gave his memorable 2014 commencement speech to University of Texas in Austin. You'll get the lessons from watching his speech, but if you want them ingrained in your head, pick up the book.
